Compare Levain's Build Your Own pack and monthly subscriptions to find the best fit for your cookie cravings, gifting needs, and budget.
Quick Answer
If you love choosing your own flavors and want a one-time gift, the Build Your Own Cookie Box is your best bet. If you crave variety delivered monthly and enjoy saving 15% each box, the Levain Cookie Club – Monthly Subscription offers convenience and savings. Choose based on whether you prioritize flexibility or recurring value.
Levain Bakery offers two popular ways to enjoy their iconic cookies: the Build Your Own Cookie Box and the Levain Cookie Club monthly subscription. Both deliver fresh, delicious cookies, but they cater to different needs and preferences.
This guide breaks down the key differences—from flavor options to cost—so you can decide which fits your cookie habits, gifting plans, and budget. No matter which you choose, you're getting Levain's famous quality.
Flexibility and Control
The Build Your Own Cookie Box puts you in charge. You can choose two or three of your favorite flavors, perfect for pleasing a mixed crowd or catering to your own cravings. It's a one-time purchase, so you can switch things up each order without commitment.
The monthly subscription, however, offers a pre-selected 8-pack box each month. While you don't choose the flavors, it introduces you to a rotating selection—ideal if you enjoy surprises or want to discover new favorites without the hassle of deciding.
- Tip: If you're gifting, the Build Your Own box lets you tailor to the recipient's tastes. For personal variety, the subscription adds excitement.
Cost and Value
Pricing is a major factor. The Build Your Own Cookie Box is priced at $26.00, which is a solid value for a curated pack. The Levain Cookie Club – Monthly Subscription is also $26.00 per box but comes with a 15% discount and free shipping, making it a better deal for repeat buyers.
If you're planning to order multiple times a year, the subscription saves you money and shipping costs. A one-time order, on the other hand, keeps your upfront spend simple and low.
- Tip: Calculate how many boxes you'll order in a year. If it's more than two, the subscription's discount adds up quickly.
Gifting and Occasions
For gifting, the Build Your Own Cookie Box is a thoughtful, customizable present. You can select flavors the recipient loves, making it personal. It's also easy to pair with other items, like the Levain Cookie Tin Gift Set for a more premium presentation.
The subscription, especially the 6-Month option, acts as a recurring gift—giving someone a box each month. It's a lovely way to show you care over time, though it requires a longer commitment and might not suit every recipient.
- Tip: For a one-time gift, choose Build Your Own. For a 'gift that keeps giving,' the prepaid 3- or 6-Month subscription works well.
Decision Rules: Choosing Between Build Your Own and Subscription
- Budget-Conscious Regular Buyer: If you plan to order cookies monthly or several times a year, the monthly subscription saves 15% and includes free shipping, outperforming one-time purchases. Choose the Levain Cookie Club - Monthly Subscription to maximize savings and ensure a steady supply.
- Flavor Control Seeker: If you have strong preferences or need to please picky eaters, the Build Your Own Cookie Box lets you choose exactly which 2 or 3 flavors to include. Go with the Build Your Own Cookie Box for total customization.
- One-Time Gift Giver: For a single, thoughtful present, the Build Your Own Cookie Box is easy to personalize. Pair it with a cookie tin for an extra special touch. Select the Build Your Own Cookie Box (and consider the Levain Cookie Tin Gift Set) for immediate gifting.
- Committed Gift Subscriber: If you want to gift someone cookies every month for a set period, the 3 or 6 Month Prepaid Subscriptions deliver recurring joy without the giver needing to remember each month. Choose a prepaid subscription (3- or 6-Month) for a worry-free recurring gift.
